A Whole House Fan Can Make Your Indoor Air Worse — If Your Attic Isn't Ready.

A whole house fan brings cooler outdoor air into your home through open windows while pushing hot indoor air into the attic and out through the attic vents. Ideally, all of that air would exit through the vents.

In most homes, however, the attic is not completely sealed from the living space. As the fan pressurizes the attic, some attic air can be pushed back into the home through wiring penetrations, recessed lights, ceiling fan boxes, registers, attic access gaps, and other openings in the ceiling.
